Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan) metro corridoris 24.9 KM fully elevated and consists of 17 stations connecting Kapurbawdi (Thane) – Bhiwandi – Kalyan.
Metro corridor 5 is a devised transportation strategy to handle the rising population suburbs of Kalyan and Bhiwandi. Presently, the resident of Bhiwandi and other commuters are dependent on road transport, whereas Kalyan commuters rely on the rail network.
Currently, travelling from Bhiwandi and Kalyan to Mumbai through road and rail take more than 2 hours for a person to travel.

Project History and Other Details
On 19th October 2016, MMRDA had approved the 24-km Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan metro line 5 route, which is estimated the total cost of ₹8,416 crores.
On 24th October 2017, The Maharashtra government cabinet approved Mumbai metro line-5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan) metro route.
The foundation stone was laid by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 18th December 2018.
MMRDA started survey work for the line by the end of December 2017. However, few shopkeepers and residents of Bhiwandi began to oppose the project and interrupted them from surveying the project. Land acquisition is a significant challenge for MMRDA due to continuous protests from local residents and farmers.
Extension of Mumbai Metro line 5 (Metro Line 12):
Days after the approval, CM Devendra Fadnavis directed MMRDA to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for Taloja – Dombivli – Kalyan metro corridor.
The move came after MP Shrikant Shinde suggested CM Devendra Fadnavis to extend the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan metro corridor to far-eastern suburbs like Dombivli, Badlapur, and Ambernath and link it with the Navi Mumbai lines, to which CM gave his nod.
According to Mr Shinde, the population in Dombivli, Badlapur, Ambernath, and Diva is growing rapidly because many middle-class populations started moving here in search of affordable budget homes.
As per a statement made to The Hindu, in the last decade, the region has witnessed 51 percent growth in population, whereas the Mumbai population has gone up by just three percent.
Chief Minister Mr Devendra Fadnavis, on 21st November 2018, approved the detailed project report (DPR) for Mumbai Metro Line 12 (Kalyan-Dombivli-Taloja), an extension of the Metro line 5 metro corridor.
Metro Line 5 Construction Phase division:
The construction of this metro route has been divided into two phases. Phase 1 will cover the metro route from Thane to Bhiwandi, and Phase 2 will cover the other stretch from Bhiwandi to Kalyan.
Currently, construction for metro line 5 phase 1 has completed 50.70% of the work. For Phase 2, in a recent update on March 2022, MMRDA has come up with a new plan to build a 3KM stretch of phase 2 underground to prevent the demolition of thousands of structures.
The new plan for phase 2 will also increase the project’s overall cost by ₹1,727 Cr.
The Metro Line – 5 route cover 17 stations – Kapurbawdi, Balkum Naka, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjur Phata, Dhamankar Naka, Bhiwandi, Gopal Nagar, Temghar, Rajnouli Village, Govegaon MIDC, Kongaon, Durgadi Fort, Sahajanand Chowk, Kalyan Railway Station, and Kalyan APMC.
